Character and Environment Test
During the first week of production for At Winter’s End, the art team and I dedicated our time to making concept art to figure out what we wanted the different characters and the forest setting to look like. We also made artwork to explore how we saw our ideas for these two aspects of the game fitting together. This was my first time making video game concept art for a studio, and I learned a lot about how to quickly communicate my ideas visually as well as gather and make references for style.
I wanted the spirits to feel less like animals and more like elements of nature shaped like animals, because I envisioned the setting leaning more towards something out of a child's imagination rather than being realistic. I imagined the forest in a similar way, seeing it as a space that was made up of real-life trees and flora that were arranged in away that read more like a fantasy world.
